c) What happens to disturb the normal state of affairs?
It goes wrong when he leaves the money behind on the train, where it is found by a bum.

d) A problem created
If Manni doesn’t come up with the money in 20 minutes he’s going to get snuffed by his boss.

e) A goal is established for the main protagonist.
Lola must come up with a way to help her boyfriend and come up with the money. She decides to ask her father, a bank manager for the money.

Act 2
Confrontation

a) On-going problems as hero takes action
Lola’s father refuses to give her the money and tells her he’s leaving her and her mother to marry another woman.

b) Obstacles
Manni decides to rob a store to get the money, Lola arrives too late to stop him. Lola helps Manni rob the store. Lola is shot when  they are caught by the police. The previous scenes are played out again, this time things happen differently.

c) Short term resolutions
This time she ends up robbing her fathers bank to get the money.

d) More problems
Manni is hit by a car crossing the road to meet Lola with the money.
Act 3
Resolution

a) Goal seeking nears an end
The story plays out again, with another set of actions and consequences. This time Lola misses her father. Manni notices the bum that has his bag of money and chases after him.
b) Conclusion reached

Lola goes to the casino and plays roulette, she wins the money. Mannie gets the money back from the bum.

c) Life continues
Manni gets the money to his boss, and they are left with the money Lola won at the casino.
Sub-plot
The affair that Lola’s father has with his workmate, and Lola’s relationship with Manni.

This is the 3 shot edit of the montage. Without the other 3 shots I feel the piece looses impact.

3 Shot Montage

For my 3 shot montage, I deviated from the brief and did a 6 shot montage. I made the decision to add in some extra shots during the course of editing, as I found these shots gave added more suspense. I have also done an edit with only 3 shots which will be uploaded in my next post for comparison. The montage was filmed with a Sony Handycam, and a tripod was used to stabilise the camera. Editing was done in Adobe Premiere, and the sound was edited in Adobe Audition. I sourced the sound files from the internet. As my montage is a homage to slasher films, I thought it appropriate to use the theme music and the musical sting from the classic Hitchcock movie “Psycho”.

As a 3 shot montage, the project was lacking. Using 6 shots made more sense and added more suspense. I would have prefered to have shot the sequences at night, but getting enough light to show the blood like substance (tomato sauce) was going to be a problem. I think a night scene would have added to the overall feel I was looking for. I think the sound effects and musical theme I used were good in achieve the suspense I was looking for and also the parody feel of the project. In parts I felt that the lighting from the afternoon sun was too bright, but wasn’t sure how to fix this using Adobe Premiere. I did do some colour grading in Premiere but found I wasn’t getting the results I was looking for.

Overall I feel I successfully completed the main components of the breif, but could have done a better job editing the sound and footage. My decision to use 6 shots instead of 3 could go for me or against me when it comes to marking.

Ric Curl Pro TVC

Following Damien’s advice, I completed a second edit for this project. In the first edit I overused transitions, left the closing title screen up for too long, and didn’t have enough action footage, I also hadn’t done any colour grading. For my second edit I fixed all these issues and focused on more of the action of the event. I colour graded the final edit so that the water appeared brighter and more of a deep blue. But, during colour grading I noticed the whites were getting too bright, one thing I’ve found Adobe Premiere is lacking is a histogram for the colour correction. The only way around this could be to import the project into After Affects and do the colour grading in there.

Animated Self Portrait
For my animated self portrait I chose to use mainly film rather than relying on studio shots which I felt would make me piece too stagnant. I found during the filming that I deviated from my initial storyboard a great deal. When it came to editing I found that there was some extra footage that I felt would fit in with the project, so I again deviated from the storyboard. Despite this I still kept with the overall premise of my self portrait, and found that the extra footage worked with the emotion of the piece. I again followed Damien’s advice and did a second edit of the project, and got rid of some ‘weak’ shots that I had in there.

One of the things that I fixed in the second edit was the still shots. I found that when I brought them in to Premiere that I couldn’t re-size the images without loosing most of what was in the shot, or making them fit the frame without leaving black space around them. I fixed this by using photoshop to re-size the images so they would fit and duplicating a little bit of the background, with the scenic shots I ended up cropping them slightly.

The green screen footage I used could have looked a lot better, while keying the footage using After Effects I realised that I didn’t have the correct lighting when I filmed it in the studio. I fixed it the best I could using the Key-light plug in within After Effects, but I lost some definition around the edges which became flickery. During the production I found that I had issues with operating the camera’s and lighting. Having never done either before I was unsure of lighting set ups and changing some of the settings on the camera. I’ve learnt from the mistakes I made during this project and feel that I now have a better idea of both the camera operation and lighting.

Areas to improve upon
The areas that I feel I need improving in are; colour grading, I need some more practice in this and also need to learn how to use the software I’m using at home for this purpose. Software, I need more practice with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. Pre-production; logline etc, I still find that I have trouble with the synopsis and treatment. Pitching, I need more practice with being able to get my ideas across to an audience. Camera operation, I need to have a bit more experience with the functions and controls of the individual cameras.
